Tick Removal
by Walter May

Hopefully no one will need this advice, but just in case..... Tick Removal Please forward to anyone with children . or hunters, etc!! thanks! A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!! I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me.

Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!" Please pass on; everyone needs this helpful hint.

Dave, can you tell me how to remove unwanted posts on Tribe?

I just tried holding a Q-tip up to the monitor, but it didn't work.

I just live in a place where they don't have the little buggers ... or at least not as many as they do in the rest of the U.S.

now if there's a way to keep the religion-peddlers offa my front door step, I'm eager to hear about it

Jess, you should send your boyfriend after them. Knowing him, I'd say he'll be pretty effective.

I have seen people use alcohol to get them out (I live in tickless Alaska, like Jess, but I spent some time in Texas). From whta I know, that works. I've also seen people put flame to their little butts, but that could be bad for the bitee.

Alcohol does work. I tell the Mormans and Witnesses, "If you're too good to have a shot and a beer with me, then get the fuck off my property." Lighting their asses on fire seems a bit extreme.

Oh wait, you mean the ticks don't you.. ;o)

Answer the door only in a towel. They get bashful and then don't come back too much.
Or open the door and spit pea soup on the ground while screaming.

    THIS DOES WORK

put one drop of tea tree or lavender essential oil directly onto the tick. the tick will not be able to breathe through the oil, and will want to back out of the body. be there at the ready with tweezers and grab the tick firmly as it backs out. keep the tick after you remove it. everyone in the woods gets ticks once in a while, and this works to remove them from humans (NO tea tree on cats!). plus the antibacterial/antiviral aspects of the essential oils can help to speed healing of the superficial tick bite. still though, you should keep an eye out for the lyme disease rash/bulls-eye symptoms, especially if you are not sure how long the tick has been feeding off of you - this is why you keep the tick, in case you need to have it lab-tested....

Don't ask me why, but I've read about this recently. It helps to be nice to the little fu*^er. Pinch it off without crushing it.
