WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two minutes in a microwave oven can sterilize most household sponges, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
A team of engineering researchers at the University of Florida found that two minutes of microwaving on full power killed or inactivated more than 99 percent of bacteria, viruses or parasites, as well as spores, on a kitchen sponge

Re: Microwave zaps germs on sponges, study finds
Sat, January 27, 2007 - 11:13 AMThanks Cap for posting this. I saw it here before I heard about it anywhere else. :)
FYI, a bunch of people have done this with dry sponges and have started fires. The fine people who put out the report did not specify that the sponge should first be thoroughly wet, and the omission has had some unfortunate consequences. In case anyone here is interested in trying this out, be sure to soak it first. -

Re: Microwave zaps germs on sponges, study finds
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 11:11 AMActually, the paper *very clearly* states that the sponges were wet.
It was the media that dropped that important detail, not the fine people who put out the report. -

Re: Microwave zaps germs on sponges, study finds
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 5:02 AMHero, with respect, I didn't write that the people who put together the report didn't state that their sponges were wet. I wrote that they didn't include a warning that people should not attempt to do this with a dry sponge when they microwave sponges at home. The experimentors wet their sponges with a nasty solution, thus the wetness. People at home are certainly not going to do that, and therefore it's not necessarily clear that wetting first will be necessary.
All that is in the press release regarding this matter is this line: "Because the microwave works by exciting water molecules, it is better to microwave wet rather than dry sponges or scrub pads, he said." THAT'S IT. Better wet than dry is a far cry from the warning that NOW sits atop the release on the University of Florida website: "PLEASE NOTE: To guard against the risk of fire, people who wish to sterilize their sponges at home must ensure the sponge is completely wet." "Must ensure." Clearly not the same thing.
See for yourself.
