Ugh! I have not had one of these things in FOREVER but now one has popped up, right on my lower lip. Does anyone have experience with a good way to make them go away FAST? I have to deal with cients at my job and this is unacceptable!!!
I've tried Blistex and will go to the store to find something stronger this morning.
Bleah.

Fri, June 10, 2005 - 11:15 AMWel, I didn't see your post till after I went to the store, so I got this stuff called Releev. It's 20 freaking dollars for 6 ml and it promises to work within a day. I'll report back.
If it doesn't work, I'll move on to the Herpecin. Thanks.

Re: Cold Sores...
Fri, June 10, 2005 - 1:28 PM:) Oh the days....
I get an average of one a year, always when I get back from a five day backpacking trip... Just can't seem to keep my lips from chapping or worst, burning...
I have tried a crap load of the over the counter stuff, but nothing does more than keep it moist... Your lucky, lip stick...
I have found that if I take a Zovirax (pill form) the last few night of my trip then have the same stuff in ointment ready in my pocket till it comes to say hello!
This can stop it dead, or make it go way faster:) Try it! Trick is have it with you all the time.
By the way its $$$$$ without ins. -

Re: Cold Sores...
Fri, June 10, 2005 - 6:06 PMI have heard that camphor oil, straight up, will help it shrink and go away. You should be able to find it at the health food or herbal supply store. Good luck! -

Re: Cold Sores...
Fri, June 10, 2005 - 11:17 PMWell. I'm still on the stuff I bought. It's been half a day and it has dried up some. Doesn't really itch, so I think it's stopped the progression, but we'll see what happens in the next twelve hours.
Thanks for the ideas! -

Re: Cold Sores...
Sun, June 12, 2005 - 1:56 PMOkay, after I used the stuff for one day it was definitely not active anymore, but the sore was still there. I didn't begin to apply till after it had begun to scab a little. Anyway, it's healing, but I don't know that the stuff made it any quicker than Blistex or something would.
Harumph. -

Re: Cold Sores...
Mon, June 13, 2005 - 9:40 AMMust agree with an earlier post, my newest preferred method is tea tree oil. It's usually gone the same day, though blistex and vitamin e oil can help the skin heal more quickly. Usually if I can catch it right away it doesn't grow enough to need extra time to heal.
I have two methods. One's a pain, but does work fairly quickly. Black tea (even regular lipton/store brand/whatever orange pekoe plain ol' tea). Brew a cup of tea with the bag and hold the tea bag on the sore. Do this two or three times in one day and it is usually healing by the next day. Again, blistex and vitamin e oil can help the skin heal more quickly.
Good luck, Amber. Sounds like it's under control any way. -

Re: Cold Sores...
Mon, June 13, 2005 - 3:48 PMI've heard that l-lysine works really well. You can take a supplement (pill form) 1000 mg 4x a day while it's active. Also, there is a lip balm called super lysine plus that you can get at a health food store. I haven't had experience with this product but the testimonials from people who have are pretty possitive. -

prevention
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 5:19 PMRe prevention, if these things are a recurring problem:
A friend of mine who had a terrible problem with cold sores told me about this additive in almost all toothpastes, Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS). Some research has indicated that it causes cold sores, or more frequent outbreaks. There's one kind of Rembrant toothpaste for cold sore sufferers without this ingredient, & one kind of Tom's without it (even most Tom's toothpastes have it). I switched to the Rembrant a few years back and I never get the little suckers anymore. Neither does my friend, who got horrible outbreaks all his life.
I order the Rembrant by the case from their website--no kidding--cuz I can't always find it in stores. -

Re: prevention
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 9:59 AMSLS is in tons of products. Including shampoo.
Tip: don't drink shampoo
Trick: rearrange the letters in "shampoo" to spell "poo mash". I don't know what it is, but I don't think I'd drink that either.

Re: Cold Sores...
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 3:24 AMSince I started taking L-lysine supplements daily I never have a problem (unless I forget or run out). The Super Lysine Plus cream really is amazing. It works VERY well and very quickly.
I get sores on my tongue sometimes when I've been very stressed and the last time I tried a bit of Colloidal Silver that my friend had. By the time I got home from her house it was gone! -

Re: Cold Sores...
Sun, June 26, 2005 - 12:17 AMI heard about l-lysine too. A couple of my friends had sores quite often and they don't when they take it as a supplement. I hadn't had one in so long perhaps I'll see whether it happens again (famous last words). I have LOTS of tea bags; will have to consider that option if/when the next one pops up!

Tue, March 18, 2008 - 4:46 PMI used Abreva on the last one and it seemed to help. Trick is to use it RIGHT when you feel the first tinglings.
