Purging wardrobe - no longer holding on to items from years ago!! Arrrrghhh, those 20 year old ankle breakers have been sitting for a loooooong time on the bottom of my closet:

Makes us wonder what on earth we were thinking originally doesn't it. Now I did it. I compacted those 20 year old leather boots as small as possible into the garbage bag without wasted time. I think it was a good idea so that I wouldn't let them take up space in my closet any more. Not worn them for years, very uncomfy and alone the germs ...Yikes! Haha ...those 20 year old ankle breakers were just plain smelly icky household waste! Do you agree with me?

Re: Do you agree with me?
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:24 PMpurging is good, but I don't agree with your choice to turn them into garbage either.
rather than trashing/dumping them, you could donate them (also a tax write-off) to a women's shelter or charity of your choice - Dress for Success comes to mind off-hand. I'm sure that there are plenty of people on the planet stricken by natural disasters, or living in poverty, or just trying to get on their feet again who would be thrilled to have functional dress shoes at all, however ugly or out of fashion they may be.
here are a few charity links from a simple google search "boston donate shoes" to get you inspired

Re: Do you agree with me?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:22 PMthe biggest problem donation places have is getting rid of the GARBAGE people donate.... if something is overly worn, stained, has permament foot odor, or ??? they throw it away like the donater should have done in the first place. Please do not raise the overhead of these wonderful non-profits by giving them your trash to deal with.... stuff with life left in it? YES - definitely send it their way! To ratty or stinky or whatever? Just throw it out...

Re: Do you agree with me?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:26 PMAlso - I'm not sure on the exact amount - but you have to donate a pretty sizable chunk of stuff to get tax credit - I'm pretty sure over $500 worth, at least, that's what my accountant told me when I asked if I could claim all the furniture/computer/stereo stuff I donated to a women's shelter fund-raiser.

Re: Do you agree with me?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 11:46 AMSometimes I walk into some laundry room and think, good god, why would people wear things that are 5 years old, let alone 20. The attitude of handing down clothing is irreverant and wrong. In an automobile driven society, I think clothing is worth a year and a little more and that is all. -

Re: Do you agree with me?
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:33 AMHmmm i'd take the boots to the thrift shop, there is some kid out there that will love them!
I shop at thrift shops all the time but, yes, i try not to buy things that look "modern", unless i am looking for a retro look..
One of the reasons i get rid of clothing, if it still fits, is that i am just plain sick of wearing it.. My clothing doesn't usually wear out.
And lately i have been trying to get rid of 2 items for every new thing i buy... In fact i have a bag to go to the thrift shop right now!!

Re: Do you agree with me?
Mon, June 30, 2008 - 5:50 AMi realy disagree with Dal.
There is one earth. As we use resources then there are fewer.
Clothes use fiber adn energy to produce, transport sell.. if and when we reuse and donate and hand down.. we are savign resources simply put.
Yes, I see an interestign point about germs.. wash the clothes! Hang them in a clean aired space!
In some cases there arealso beautiful memories attached to clothes.
Please think about the earth adn out resources..
look! the war is emptying our economy and tis simply to try to get us more resources so we can buy and make more. Well, sadly we are beginning to feel an economic crash now from it. -

Agree with CathyQ and disagree with Dal

I could not agree with you more, Cathy. Dal's attitude of rampant consumerism and a disposable Earth is irresponsible at best, and highly deplorable. I weep for the state of our world.
