Yup, our two cats have them and I dont want to use frontline type stuff on them.
Any other suggestions, especially around the home??

Re: Fleas
Sun, June 26, 2005 - 12:22 AMThis is on the "stolen from another tribe" thread:
"Kills fleas instantly. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas. "
Anyone know if this works? We don't really have fleas up here. -

Sun, June 26, 2005 - 10:01 AMI've considered buying 5 gallons of vegetable oil and giving the cats a bath in that (while having a fantasy of Southern fried cats). -

Re: Fleas
Sun, June 26, 2005 - 12:50 PMi've used avon skin so soft on my pets. i just moisten a paper towel ro something less noisy for cats, and just rub it into the fur. but it only repells becasue it contains citronella oil. it doesn't kill the fleas.
to kill the fleas that come off you cats:
for the house and yard, i found this GREAT stuff that will not harm vertebrates!! it's made by greenlight ( i bought it at lowe's home improvement store), and it has only natural ingredients that interfere with the nervous system of insects. it smells wonderful since it has clove and mint oils. it will not hurt birdies, animals, lizards, etc.. BUt i wouln't put it on any animal, just the floors and in the yard.
it not only repells, it kills insects because their nervous system is different from vertebrates. cool, huh?
skin so soft for the cats
Greenlight Biorganic Insect Control for the house and yard.
works for me! :)

Re: Fleas
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 8:28 AMIf your kitties have a special bed you can fill the cushions with cedar shavings. Fleas hate the smell! We do this for my dog just putting it in his house with no covers. The natural oils in the cedar is good for his fur, he smells a bit nicer, and he sleeps flea free!

Re: Fleas
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 10:32 AMif they're in your house, vaccuum daily. and throw the bag out each time or they'll just crawl back out. but this is a good way to get a majority of the carpet dwellers. As far as chemicals to spray, you'll need one with a growth inhibitor. Bengal makes a pretty good one you can buy at walmart or lowes. The Vet will also have something like this called Virbac or something like that.
My grandmomma had a more holistic method. She used a heat lamp situated over a baking pan with a flysheet in the bottom of it. fleas would come to the heat and get stuck to the pad.
Also, fleas have an aversion to garlic and ginger. but you'll have some stinky cats if you do that.

Sat, March 15, 2008 - 1:59 PMThose foggers diminsh the flea tribe but they usually re-group. A system of cleaning and fogging seems good. Plus, keep grooming the cats. The fleas know about the cats blood by now. -

Re: Fleas
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 5:30 PMRemember to get the fleas off of the cats too. Feed them garlic and brewers yeast. They have recipes online for how to make treats that include these ingredients or just try to sneak it in their food.
I hate chemicals too, but make sure to get rid of the fleas above all. My sister is a vet and I've heard really sad stories about animals that have problems associated with fleas, like worms and skin problems.
Good luck! Keep us posted if that works.
